Porn and “Cuties” Gone Wild addressed on TV sitcom rerun

Who knew I would be inspired by a sexist TV sitcom scene discussing porn over the holiday break?  While working out over, I had the TV on.   The show on TV was “According to Jim” starring Jim Belushi.   The three men in the scene are about to watch a DVD they received in the mail titled something like “Cuties Gone Wild.” Two of the men are married (their wives are sisters) and the 3rd guy is the sisters’ brother.

The 2 wives of the men are in the kitchen nearby and notice what the men are about to watch.  The one wife says its no big deal while the other wife is bothered by what the men are doing.  Suddenly, the women realize the title of the DVD the guys are watching – a DVD the 2 wives are on from when they “flashed the camera” several years back.  They had not told their husbands about their appearance in the video.  The 2 women want to find a way to stop the men from watching the video and so they go into the room – right as the scene of one of them is about to happen.

The ensuing shock of the guys changes the entire tone of the conversation.  The brother of the 2 sisters says (this is paraphrased), “I’m done with SMUT!  It’s no fun when you realize the girls are people with lives and families.”  You hear the audience laugh track upon him making this statement.

Discuss this scene with students.  WHO would they see in a video which would trigger a change in their view of pornography?  How will you or have you taken the examples students see on TV, movies, music, online, etc.. to help them dive deeper into the subject matter?  Share by “Leaving a Comment” on this post.
